The most popular way of passively investing in the stock market is through S&P500 Exchange Traded Fund [ETFs]. They offer investors a piece of the worlds leading companies and has historically provided good returns and dividend.

The leading ETFs: VOO, IVV and SPY only charge a commission fee of 0,03% and has yielded about 10% return over the last decades, which is hard to beat. If you invested 1,000$ in an SP500 index fund or ETF in 1980, it would've been turned into 110,000$ by 2020.

Overall, an SP500 ETF is cheap, stable, diversified and has offered better returns than other indexes such as FTSE100, Dow jones, MSCI Europe or Hang Seng.
